I love debating. It’s no secret. I also want to become a lawyer (accepting donations for tuition now). And I always love a challenge.
The opportunity presented itsself when I came across a conservative blogger’s site and specifically a nonsensically numbered post about his feelings against gay marriage. In his ignorant post he tried to say that gays were demanding “special” rights and not equal rights. But this is not what caught my eye. He proposed a challenge with his assertation that our country was founded on “Godly principles.”
“Despite the bogus claims of some on the Left, the United States was founded on Godly principles. True, the Founders didn’t want a government run by a particular religion, but it wanted a nation whose Lord is God. Check the facades of the buildings in D.C. Check the currency. Check the founding document!”
So, naturally, I checked. The following is my response that I tried to post to his site. Whether or not it shows up, is up to the blogger but hopefully I won’t be censored.
“Check the founding document!”I checked….It mentions “Lord” in the date. As in “Year of our Lord” which in short form roughly translates to AD (Anno Domini). Otherwise, there is no mention of “God” “Deity” “Creator” “Flying Spaghetti Monster” anywhere.
It has this nifty little mention of religion though at one point that says….”Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion, nor prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” Which if I understand that correctly the government can’t promote one religion over another, whether that be Atheism, Christianity, Judeism, Muslim, or Snorkism. They also can’t stifle my private practice of Snork worshiping. Pesky little amendment huh?
Oh there is one document, but It’s not really a “founding” document and has no real legal authority, though it does set the stage for our wonderful governmnet and society. It’s called the “Declaration of Independence.” (Did I use the scare quotes right?) Even this document is ambiguous with it’s diety terminology. Terms like “Nature’s God” and “their Creator.”
No, I just can’t seem to find any concrete “Godly” declarations in the founding documents. Oh and that money thing? You do know when “In God We Trust” was added to the currency right? Or when “Under God” was added to the pledge? Well just for grins we’ll say it was added oh around the 1950’s. Almost two centuries after the Constitution and the Bill of Rights were ratified, and in the face of that pesky First Amendment by acts of Congress. Oddly, Congress was not the architect of these additions. People weren’t even petitioning for it. In fact it was the CIA who, in an attempt to “bitch slap” the communists by saying our form of economy/government was better because it was not “Godless.” So, in an attempt at feigning patriotism and faith the Congress decided to ignore the First Amendment and write laws declaring that Americans’ trust was in God. They modified The Pledge. By the way did you know The Pledge was written by a foreign girl who came to the country, modified by a Baptist minister to add “of the United States of America,” and not “Under God.” It was then written into law that it was our national pledge. “Under God” was added later at about the same time “In God We Trust” was started appearing on our currency.
The buildings in DC, you know…the ones you mentioned in your post? Well let’s explore the history of those buildings. While DC was created only a couple of decades after the government was created, those building with God all over them were erected many years afterwards. Lets take a favorite one (the one where laws are deemed “Constitutional” or “UnConstitutional.” Though the Supreme Court has for the most part been in DC through out our great country’s history the building has not. In fact, until 1935 the Justices of the Supreme Court had to share space with Congress, mostly in the basement, with a few lower courts including an orphan court. Occaisionally they were “let upstairs” and were able to use chambers that were abandoned by the House or Senate. Needless to say that was a long 157 years. The corner stone was laid on October 13, 1932, and completed in 1935.
Not all the justices were thrilled by the new arrangements, the courtroom in particular. Harlan Fiske Stone complained it was “almost bombastically pretentious…Wholly inappropriate for a quiet group of old boys such as the Supreme Court.” Another justice observed that he felt the court would be “nine black beetles in the Temple of Karnak,” while still another complained that such pomp and ceremony suggested the Justices ought to enter the courtroom riding on elephants.
Amusingly, on the facade of the building Moses is depicted holding the Ten Commandments, what’s visible (written in Hebrew) are the ends of the commandments, (minus “Thou shalt not”) steal, kill, and commit adultry. Almost encouraging these offenses. Though Moses is depicted, Muhammed and Buddah are as well, but as great law givers. Not as statements of religion. By the way, I also might add that not all of the Ten Commandments are law. As the very first four would be deemed unconstitutional. Only four of the commandments are actually law, six through nine if you weren’t sure.
Did you know the vast majority of Christians violate the second commandment? “Thou shalt not make graven images…” is broken all the time with depictions of Jesus, Angels, and many others.
Hopefully I’ve knocked down enough strawmen for you to re-educate yourself on our Nation’s “Godly” history.

Well dear readers, it appears that our friends over at WingNut Daily have gotten all fired up again at NBC. “Over what,” you might ask? Basically, that the host, Carson Kressley and Miss USA 2004, Shandi Finnessey made ‘gay’ jokes at the 2006 Miss Universe Pageant. They said nothing hurtful or mean to anyone. In fact, if anything, complimentary jokes were made.
Carson: I also loved Miss Puerto Rico. Again I have to confess I was looking at her dress, I was kind of mesmerized.
Shandi: You want to borrow it, is what you want to do?
I imagine that the real conversation that they would’ve preferred to hear would have gone a little something like this:
Carson: I also loved Miss Puerto Rico. Again, I have to confess, I was looking at that carmel colored ass. I was mesmerized by it. Mmm mm.
Shandi: So you want to borrow it, is that what you want to do?
Carson: Borrow it, tap it, spank it, call it what you will, I want it.
Sadly, Carson, being gay, could not bring himself to say such mysogenistic comments about the women who were there to showcase their assetts. And since the hosts weren’t willing to comment on the women’s abilities in the kitchen, or other housrelated chores, such as sex and child birth the writers at WingNut Daily have come up with a poll. Upset about the lack of ‘taste’ for the opposite genetailia, the readers have decided that it’d be better for them to boycott all things NBC. The “Peacock” network I hope, could care less…and it’s fun to say words with cock as their suffix. Take a look at this poppycock.

Well by the low number of votes for the “Why shouldn’t a homsexual provied commentary? ‘Gays’ as if we didn’t exist are known for their fasion sense.” At least they’re not stereotyping.
For those of you who’d like to know Miss Puerto Rico Won the contest.

In a recent search for a picture to use here on this wonderful vessel of informaiton I call blog I came across an “ex-gay” ministry called Fish On The Other Side (FOTOS). While I still don’t agree with their stance based on my own personal religious beleifs. I do have to say that I’m impressed. And honestly think this is one of the better ways to approach the “ex-truth” reparative therapy.
The founder and pastor of the ministry is Mr. Bill Hensen. Bill is a “former” gay man. He had a monogamous partner and a rather happy life as a gay man. However upon his own study of the Bible that made up his vague understanding of his beleif system he beleived that his love life was sin in God’s eyes. This caused a lot of unhappiness in him as he struggled between his religion and his life. He has since ended his relationship with the man and formed a new relationship with a woman that was reccomended to him. He’s married and has children with her.
What is different about this “ex-gay” ministry is that they also preach no homophobia. They say that change is not for everyone and not everyone can change. They don’t beleive in forcing people to change, that it’s up to the individual.
This is definitely a much different approach and probably a lot more civil than what is being taught by those at Exodus Ministries, or at Love Won Out, but it does effectively the same thing. Using literal interpretation of the Bible brainwashes people to think they’re not worthy of God’s love because of whom and how they love.
So while they preach it’s ok to be “ex-gay” “ex-homophobia” is better than teaching the full “ex-truth” with “ex-proven” documents.

In a 236 – 187 vote the House of Representatives was unable to gain the two-thirds majority required to pass an amendment banning same-sex nuptuals. This amendment was identicle to the one defeated in the Senate just over a month ago. Many of the opponents of the Marriage “Protection” Amendment, introduced by Marilyn Musgrave, the representative endorsed by the KKK, called the amendment exactly what it was, a devisive, hurtful, hateful, bigoted and mean-spirited attempt to segregate a minority of the population. The pro-amendment folks, kept saying things like it’s the “essence of stability.” Why then would they not want to promote stability in gay and lesbian families I don’t know.
Regardless Here is the sound of political pandering, bigotry, and malfeasence wrapped up into a nice 30 second package. The presenters that are heard are the following: Robin Hayes, Virginia Foxx, Patrick McHenry, Randy Neughbauer, and Todd Akin. There were plenty more speakers but this is all I could find stand and besides more would have just been “white” noise.

I reported on my feelings about a young boy in Florida earlier this month by recanting my own childhood history. While I am a little confused as to exactly what to do with this situation I think that John Paulk of Focus on the Family has gone a little off his rocker.
“This is a boy, not a girl,” he said. “He’s got testosterone flowing through him. As he ages and he goes through puberty, he’s going to get even more confused. He’s going to be ridiculed and made fun of in school by other peers, no matter how tolerant it is.”
I think that the child has made things clear. She’s not confused. She knows exactly who she is and who she will be when she’s older. The only way that she will be ridiculed is if people like John Faulk are allowed to poison th other children’s minds with his messages of intolerance. Lest we remind him that he’s an “ex-gay” who’s gone back and forth with his sexuality. John Faulk is neither credible nor reliable for his views on homosexuality, gender dysphoria, or any other matter of the human condition.

Howard Dean, the Vermont Governer, not known to readily agree with himself or the Democratic National Committee that he chairs, had this to say about the NY Appelate ruling on Same Sex Marriage:
“As Democrats, we believe that every American has a right to equal protection under the law and to live in dignity. And we must respect the right of every family to live in dignity with equal rights, responsibilities and protections under the law,”
“Today’s decision by the New York Court of Appeals, which relies on outdated and bigoted notions about families, is deeply disappointing, but it does not end the effort to achieve this goal.”
Earlier this year in an appearance on the Pat Robertson hosted “700 Club” Howard Dean said in an interview:
“The Democratic Party platform from 2004 says that marriage is between a man and a woman. That’s what it says.”
Which, when called out later, apologized to the many outraged Democratic voters for his misstatement of the Dem Platform that states the following with regard to marriage equality:
“We support full inclusion of gay and lesbian families in the life of our nation and seek equal responsibilities, benefits, and protections for these families.”
Not to mention Dean’s elimination of the gay outreach post headed by Jeff Soref in February or the retaliatory sacking of Donald Hitchcock the gay outreach adviser. Dean’s excuse was that the DNC didn’t need these positions and that they needed people to focus on everyone instead of the niche groups.
What I say is, Howard, and the rest of the Dems, pick a platform and stick with it. We don’t need any more waffles from the Democratic Party. We’re full of waffles and now want our ‘entree’ of what the Democrats can do for us instead of not be the Bush Administration. Grow a pair and stand up to the Republicans and their tyranny. Have solutions instead of complaints! This is what Americans want and this is what Americans need. Now run along and start thinking.

The Highest Court in New York has determined today that Gays and Lesbians do not have a constitutional right to marriage under current law. They have determined that it is up to the legislature to enact such laws. However, there have been laws introduced in NY legislature since 1971 to allow equal marriage rights to gays and lesbians but for 35 years these have never made it out of committee which shows that the knuckle draggers are also dragging their feet on this matter of equality.
Many New Yorkers are saddened by this as well as many conservatives are happy about this ruling. This was a ruling of 4-2 against gay marriage with one judge recusing himself.
Chief Judge Kaye wrote in her dissent:
It is uniquely the function of the Judicial Branch to safeguard individual liberties guaranteed by the New York State Constitution, and to order redress for their violation. The Court’s duty to protect constitutional rights is an imperative of the separation of powers, not its enemy.
I am confident that future generations will look back on today’s decision as an unfortunate misstep.
Which goes to show that at least someone was thinking.
